Troubleshooting

Every error in the Skein window has a plain-language message and a View technical details section with the underlying error. Include the technical details when contacting support.

"Can't reach the collaboration server. Retrying…"

The editor can't open a WebSocket. Check your internet connection, VPN/proxy (WebSocket upgrades must be allowed — see Networking), and the server URL in Skein window → Settings → Server. Skein keeps retrying with backoff; Reconnect now retries immediately.

"Connection to the collaboration server was interrupted. We're trying to reconnect."

The connection dropped (technical details show 1006). Your locks are held for 15 seconds; if you're back in time nothing is lost. Edits you make meanwhile are queued — the window shows how many are waiting.

"Your sign-in expired or was revoked. Please sign in again."

Your editor sign-in was revoked (password change, Sign out of that device on the website, or reuse of an old token). Sign in again.

"You no longer have access to this project or session."

You were removed from the project, or the session is full for your plan.

"Someone else is editing this object right now."

Another collaborator holds the lock. Their name is on the object in the Scene view. Wait for them to deselect it, or ask an admin to force-unlock.

"'X' isn't in the saved scene yet, so changes to it aren't shared."

The object exists only on your machine (created before the session and never saved/committed). Save and commit the scene, have everyone pull, and rejoin — or delete it and recreate it during the session (empty, primitive or prefab).

Teammates see different objects / "has no … component here"

Collaborators opened different versions of the scene. Everyone should pull the same commit, then rejoin the session.

Snapshot fails: "Snapshots need text scene files"

Set Edit → Project Settings → Editor → Asset Serialization Mode to Force Text.

Nothing appears in the Scene view

Check Skein window → Settings → Scene view toggles and that both of you have the same scene open. Cameras of people in other scenes aren't drawn.

The editor feels slow

Skein processes incoming messages for at most ~4 ms per editor update and draws a bounded number of overlays. If you suspect Skein, turn off overlays in Settings and open Window → Analysis → Profiler (Editor mode) — Skein work appears under EditorApplication.update and SceneView.duringSceneGui. Please report what you find.

Server operators

  • GET /readyz on the API and realtime services checks Postgres and Redis.
  • /metrics (Prometheus) — see Scaling for the important series.
  • Logs are structured JSON; every API error response includes a requestId that appears in the logs.
