FAQ

Does Skein replace Git / Unity Version Control / Perforce? No. Skein makes the time between commits collaborative. You still commit and pull scenes and assets.

Does it change my scenes or add components? No. Identity uses Unity's GlobalObjectId; nothing is added to your scenes and no runtime code ships in builds.

What happens if two people edit the same object? The first to select it gets the lock; the other sees who is editing, and any edit they make to it is undone with a message. See Conflicts & locking.

What if my laptop dies while I hold locks? Locks are leases renewed every 5 s. They're released ~15–20 s after your editor goes silent. Admins can also force-unlock.

Can people in different scenes join the same session? Yes. Each person's activity shows which scene they're in, and changes apply to whoever has that scene open.

Which Unity versions are supported? 2021.3 LTS and newer.

Is the realtime traffic encrypted? Yes, over TLS (wss://). Connection tickets are short-lived, single-use and signed.

Can I self-host? Yes — the full stack runs with Docker. See Self-hosting & deployment.

Is my scene data stored? Only what's needed: the change history (for your plan's retention period) and snapshots you create. Camera movement and selections are relayed live and never stored.
